BOSTON (AP) — Whether they got lost, sick or swam astray chasing food, 77 dolphins that beached on Cape Cod in recent weeks have died, the second time in three months New England has seen a mass of marine mammal deaths.

Now, scientists are trying to figure out why.

They're also researching whether there's any connection to a die-off this fall of 162 harbor seals, whose carcasses were found between northern Massachusetts and Maine.

Scientists later determined the seal deaths were linked to an influenza virus similar to one found in birds but never before seen in seals. In a letter earlier this month, Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry and Rep. William Keating asked Jane Lubchenco, head of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, to investigate "any common cause" between the dolphin and seal deaths.

The Thai Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation has announced that at least 244 people have been killed in floods in Thailand since mid-July.
"The full extent of damage has yet to occur," the UN's Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, meanwhile, said in a statement on Thursday.

The floods have affected nearly two million people. The worst-hit regions are in the northern, northeastern, and central parts of the country, where many of the highways remain water-logged.

Also on Thursday, hundreds of prisoners were evacuated from a prison in the Ayutthaya town, about 105 kilometers (65 miles) north of the capital, Bangkok, Reuters reported.

Somsak Rangsiyopas, Deputy Director-General of the country's Correction Department, said water nearly two meters (six feet) high had inundated the prison and the area around it.

"We had to the use rope to get people out of the prison due to the strong current," he said, adding that the prisoners were being transferred to nearby jails.

The forecast for the growth of the country's gross domestic product (GDP) this year stands at 3.6 percent instead of the previously-projected 4.4 percent because of the floods, according to Thailand's Center for Economic and Business Forecasting.

The latest trouble involves a deluge of water that was diverted from the Mississippi River and is headed toward the town of about 12,000 people.
The Army Corps of Engineers, desperate to save Baton Rouge and New Orleans from flooding, opened a spigot on a spillway over the weekend, intentionally flooding this part of Cajun country, an area much less populated. But the cascade of water from the Morganza floodway is hampering the local oil industry and fishermen on the bayou.
Meanwhile, what is believed to be the first death related to the flooding since the river's rising waters began affecting Mississippi and Louisiana was reported Thursday in Vicksburg, Miss. Walter Cook, 69, who drowned, died early Thursday at a hospital after being pulled from floodwaters Wednesday.
Also, the threat of flooding prompted at least one school district in Louisiana to end the school year early. Students in Assumption Parish schools will not have to attend classes next week because the school board voted Wednesday to end the school year on Friday."
